FAQ

1. When did acts of birth, marriage and death start being kept at the Public Registry?
Birth, marriage and death registrations date back to the year 1863.

2. What about records before 1863?
Records prior to that year were drawn up by ecclesiastical authorities and can be found only in church archives.     Thus baptismal, marriage and death certificates before 1863 can only be obtained from the relative parishes in     Malta and Gozo.

3. Is it possible to order family tree searches from the Public Registry?
The Public Registry can only issue birth, marriage and death certificates when all the relative particulars are     forwarded by the applicant. However, searches into family trees are carried out by private genealogists. A list of     such persons is available from the Department of Information of number 3, Castille Place, Valletta, Malta, telephone     no. 2200 1700 / 2200 1739, e-mail address info.doi@gov.mt or 153@gov.mt.
